Initially I wasn't going to bother with a dawny this morning having had to get up at 05:30 for the last three mornings
. I was thinking that the swell forecast wasn't looking that great and it would probably equate to 1-2ft dribble
. Then I watched David's vid which swayed me slightly, and then I spoke with Gman who who assured me that the waves were going to be waist-chest-high and glassy! So I thought OK i'll do it!
So I get up at 04:30, drive for the best part of an hour and arrive in the car park at Holywell where I meet up with Gman and Ian (and later Juan). Once we're suited and walking down the beach, dawn breaking, we soon realise that the surf is in fact 1-2ft dribble
! But we persevere, bolstering each other's enthusiasm with phrases such as "this will get better on the push"!?
We paddle out (into the dribble) and have one or two weak dribbly waves hoping that the surf will improve as the tide pushes......
Thankfully it did improve quite a bit with some cheeky waist-chest high sets coming through that were holding up nicely with bowling sections and re-forms on the inside to be had
.
Maybe it was because of my low expectations but I ended up really enjoying the session and having some good lefts and rights. Then I was treated to apres coffee courtesy of Ian, and the most amazingly delicious home-made chocolate made by Juan. Add to that the usual comradary and banter that us matters seem to enjoy, and all-in-all it turned out to be a great session (worth getting up early for (for the chocolate alone))!
Thanks guys for making this morning yet another fun, memorable mat session
