That's Japanese.The norm out there.Superstition says you should hide your thumbs when one passes,or you won;t see your parents die.Thumbs are oyayubi or "parentfingers".
I love funerals.You pass the deceased's thumb around using chopsticks(hence passing food from chopsticks to chopsticks is a faux pas).You only pay 2000 yen and come away with a bumper party bag.
And you're allowed to take pics.Perfect.
