End Covert Seal Slaughter in Scotland

Post  GRAYMAN on Tue Oct 09, 2012 5:06 pm

Grey seals are one of Scotland’s iconic animals, providing enjoyment to locals and tourists alike and forming an essential part of the ocean ecosystem. They used to be shot in their thousands as a perceived threat to fish stocks in an almost unregulated slaughter. Last year, legislation was introduced to reduce the numbers killed.

Seals are, however, still slaughtered. Fish farmers are allowed to kill seals in a pointless cull which makes little ecological or even economic sense. The shooting is now done in secret, probably to prevent the outcry that would result from the broadcast of any videos.

Sustainable fish farming involves working with ocean wildlife, not against it. You don’t launch into a slaughter reminiscent of the 19 th century because an animal is inconvenient. Instead you either tolerate it or find other solutions, such as physical barriers.

Tell the Scottish Government to end this outdated, unnecessary and brutal slaughter immediately.

Not so sure about the physical barrier line but the government need a kick up the arse.

    Signed.

Been aware of this for some time and it is only going to get worse now that they want to make the salmon fisheries a massive enclave in the economy due to global demand.

    Don't buy their bloodstained fish

I suppose by "physical barrier" that they'll try to seal off the area.
I don't understand their rationale behind this.If you stock Lochs and estuaries with weak,slow-swimming food, what's going to happen?I wonder if they'll kill sea otters or osprey as well.
Must say I had seal when I was living in Lofoten,it was ok if you couldn't get anything else. But I can't get pointless killing.
Meanwhile, after National Trust has just inoculated a fair few badgers with TB vaccine,Defra instigate a wide-spread cull.Where's the consistency and communication?

It's just so the Tories have something to kill until they get around to overturning the fox hunting ban. They're preoccupiedwwith culling the NHS at the moment.

We had to finish off three rabbits suffering from Myxi today in one property alone.Their numbers have increased so much that populations are overlapping and viruses are rife.
No need to control predator numbers at all.

To be fair, rabbits were introduced to this country by the Romans:"Rabbits, meet Britannia.Britannia,rabbits".
Just got a wood pigeon off a mate.Roasting it now with parsnips.
Cor,Stu,if you get tired of your dog,I could make a nice little bourgignon, with Chianti...
How about a recipe section on the forum?

Y'know it's actually fine to eat rabbit with mixomytosis. I wouldn't fancy it mind.
