Hi, UK mat riders, thought I'd introduce myself as a new member. Sad I only found this forum once I'd left the UK, put onto it by a friend in Brittany. Until then I thought it was just me!

I'm now on the west coast of Europe, surfing, bodysurfing, mat riding, and working on my dipsomania. The lifeguards on town beaches here in Portugal have an odd attitude to mats. You can sum it up as, "I haven't seen one before, they're not allowed."

If anyone's interested, I'm putting up the odd blog about the surfing life here:

    Howdo Paul.

Jim said I'd just missed you when I was over there. Sounds like you had better waves than I managed.

We were thinking about a trip to Portugal. What time to the lifeguards start? Might be able to pre-dawn them.

    Love the blog.

fourstringsisplenty (via his blog) wrote:On a surfboard you duck dive, shoving the board under water. That’s pretty much impossible with a mat, which is basically a giant bag of air. Instead you can either swim out with the mat tucked into your wetsuit and blow it up out there; or roll over as a wave hits you, clutching the bag in the kind of death hug the wrestler Giant Haystacks once used.

    Turtle-rolls are sometimes useful:

However, there is a tried and tested duckdive technique which might be worth a go. Certainly helps get under close fetch sets! It's in the riding mats section (click the button below):

Good luck and keep us up to speed!!!

You write really well Paul. This is my favourite line to date:

How many years does it take to learn that? Even when you've learnt it, how often to you stay out anyway?!

Learnt Buddha Wave early; started following the rule very late. Thanks for the kind words about the blog.

We had one really good swell in Brittany, just as Jim did his back in, then it eased off a bit. Didn't get the mat going out there really: it saw more action in the French Basque country. Northern Spain in the next few weeks: what price a mat session at Meñakoz? I'll have to improve my duckdiving technique, though.

The lifeguards here come on at around 0830 and finish around 1900. To be honest, they seem to be OK-ish about the mat if they've already seen me surf on a board. Otherwise they think I'm a tourist on an airbag (not far from the truth) and whistle me out.

The only thing lower down the scale seems to be bodysurfing...

Sounds like they need a new scale.

Ha! My first surf was at Compton Bay, IOW, on a bellyboard. But my first mat surf was at Weston, also on a li-lo!
