I'm interested to hear people's techniques for sealing their wooden craft. I've used decking oil which did well. More recently I've used linseed oil which I've stuck straight on.

The linseed had sealed things well but I get cloudy eyes after a surf! That can't be health can it? Shocked I'm wondering if I should thin it or some such.

Anyway, peoples tips and thoughts appreciated.

Best I found is two part epoxy resin which stays clear after being wet and dried and gives a loveley gloss finish which can be waxed for traction

Liberon Tung oil. Three thinned coats, leave a good half hour plus (best done a few days apart) to soak in and wipe all excess with cotton. Then one last coat of pure oil. Not had to do this with a board but any excess dried bobbles of oil take of with a very light sand, with very fine paper. Dispose of rags carefully as then can ignite (still dont get why?). The first board I made I only did three thinned coats. Its been left for days in the summer sun with salt on, in and out of the water all day, still hasnt needed any more oil.

Its all on the tin, white spirit, makes it very thin and really soaks deep into the wood. Weve got an oak work surface that Ive used tung on and its brilliant, only needs a light touch up now and then. I did the back door with the stuff and that works a treat. Infact Id use it for all external word work rather than paint, easier to use easier to reapply and its gets into the wood rather than sitting on top like paint.

    Hi G
You could try a boat building oil called DEKS OLJE www.deksolje.com/
you can put it on wet on wet as many coats as you like with the No1 for a mat finish or put on the No2 for a gloss finish.
Its not cheap but it is good.

    Thanks fellas. Plenty of options.

Has anybody else had the stinging eye thing after surfing their oily beasts?

Never had stingy eyes from any oil, are you sure its not got something to do with all that lynx you wear?

Might be. I never get it out on the town though! Surprised

It seems like residual oil and I wonder if that's down to not thinning.

This post is already a week old, sorry about adding to it late but thought I'd offer this option; one part raw linseed oil, one part vinegar, one part gum turpentine, mix well and apply, thats Tom Wegener's recommendation. When I make my mix I do it slightly differently, about half of it linseed oil, about a third apple cider vinegar, and the remainder (a fifth or so) gum turpentine, I like that mix and use that on my Alaia's.

Thanks Matt. You in the UK? Gum Turps seems to be hard to source over here.

    Hi G,

No not in the UK I'm currently in Perth, Western Australia...

Matt23 mentioned the use of white spirit, maybe thats the best option for a more user friendly thinner, didn't realize gum turps wasn't readily available there.

    Cheers Mattj.

I've chucked together a 3:1 mix of linseed and white spirit so I'll see how it goes. Might need to be a touch thinner.
