Post  tommo Mon Nov 28, 2011 10:15 pm

I went out at Shoreham on Sunday - first time for a while - and had a laugh in the semi-shoreys. But .... I had a 'mare trying to keep hold of the mat with gloves on to the extent that I ditched them half way through. I won't get away with that for much longer so I was wondering if anyone else has some smart ideas for getting around it before I have to just try some new ones?

    Thanks,

    Tom

Does the mat feel a bit slippery in general? I had to give mine a good scrub in very soapy water recently as it was like a mackerel. You could always apply some soudal on the corners?

Well that's a funny one really.
The mat's a new-ish RT so it's got PG's waxy coating on it which works well enough when I'm properly lying on it. If I get some water between me and it, such as in a mess of whitewater then it does get slippy, but I'm guessing that's just to be expected. But.. the rubber coating on my gloves was completely useless and I just couldn't get a good hold of it - mackerel-like Cool .

Maybe Soudal's the answer, on the gloves possibly - what is it? Smile

Thanks for reminding me. Soudall Fix All High Tack is what I use to grip mats. You spread it on and stipple it. I'm planning a S-FAHT grip on the finger tips of my gloves. I'll stick a post on when I've done it.

Bear hugs are also helpful. Smile

I'm pretty new to mat riding....got my mat in sept? off ebay. Anyway had it out about 5 times in nothing over 3ft.. Surfed it today at a yorkshire reef break, well overhead (in stand up terms....not lying down, then everythings overhead!). Crazy fast rides but some horrendous wipeouts, lost the mat 3 times as I couldnt hold on!

Any tips for keeping a hold when your about to get sizable wave on the head?

Forward roll ala Cookson?I often just let go at such times, then bodysurf in backstroke to get the mat.Obviously that won;t work on reefs though!
Reckon those darkskin gloves might be onto something. They do Black Ops gloves too, which aren;t webbed.Or a pair of Marigolds, which is what I used to wear and under winter gloves in Norway!Good grip. The pink ones in particular have a superior granular texture conducive to matting...

You'll get skilled at going into a last second bear hug. That's the best bet on solid poundings. The forward roll exit is something I use but can open your fingers if you don't actively hang on really tight.

Well that's given me a whole new direction. I'm going to get involved in some scrubbing and try rubber and rollers if that doesn't do it for me.

    You guys are just awesome.

Can someone explain in a bit more detail this forward roll technique. Are we talking as you approach a wave to help go under it or when on a wave and about to have a close out? either way I can`t picture what the feck your on about Very Happy Just after clarity of the body position, technique and where the mat is etc. Nice one

A ha got ya, cheers G, so that clearly allows you to pop out behind the broken wave rather than being taken in with the white water, nice one my new lesson for today tongue

Been surf matting for about 10 months now and have gone from a canvas topped Standard which I added the hot wax coating for exra grip to a Blue streak Fatty with a Soudal high tack deck which is a lot thicker than on most of the mats I have seen and gives me tons of grip and is slowly changing the way I surf.

Happy to roll out on waves up to 4ft but after this change to 180 turn or try and get over the back of the wave before it breaks. In bigger waves rolling out means you have no control and our about to take a beating whilst trying to hold on to your mat, last time in 6ft caught 9 waves and lost my mat three times rolling out, since changing to 180 turn have not lost mat once but yet to surf in 6ft again so only time will tell. 180 turn is as the wave starts to break you turn your mat so your facing back out to sea up till now I have managed to stay on top of the wave and able to paddle straigh way and not get caught in to much whitewater.

Would never roll out on a reef after banging my knee in shallow water that I thought was deeper on reefs I always keep my mat bettween me and the reef

I think you may be over egging the protection offered by a mat on rocks there Jerry! Very Happy

What you've described on problems with the forward roll sound similar to mine in that the force of the wave just opens my fingers as I go when its chunky. I only use a forward roll on white water. Punching out is a far better option on a green wave. However, I think you vs- transfer you small wave exit (and duckdive) strategies to bigger waves in my opinion.

I've had good results adjusting my grip, switching to a bear hug rather than holding corners.

PS I'm a big fan of your grip job. Smile

Had a quick go on my old Canvas topped mat last Sunday and could not believe the difference bettween that and the Soudal gripped one and would be in no rush to go back to it just prefer the size to the Fatty.

Is it just the size or the difference in construction and grip?

Re hanging on, I woreMY GLOVES and held on fine. Bear hugs are the answer most of the time for me. Pull your knees up too.

This is kinda strange when I put both mats back to back there is no obvious difference in lenth and I only notice it in the water the Fatty just feels longer and needs more time in getting into riding position (grip ? ) no difference once on the wave.

Looks like a fair old swell this weekend and the first time in gloves watch this space

Hmmm... Strange that you don't notice a difference between your mats. Could be down to the heavy grip job perhaps?

OK , heres a thought, feel free to flame me if you disagree...

Take a rectangular piece of mat-like material and punch 2 holes in it....

    Left drawing....
    Hanging on Mattag

Fold it over with the holes closest to the fold and then glue it to the top and bottom of the flat edge at the tail of your mat.
    right drawing...
Use a waterproof glue and it should hold up.
Now attach a legrope to / thru the holes.
If its wide enough it will spread the forces out and if it fails it will just pull off the mat.
    Something anyone can do themselves.

    whattayareckon ???
